Alamo Square Tour Bus Hearing TodayFlickr/-acola-
The fate of tour buses roaming the streets around Alamo Square will be decided at a hearing today.

Back in September we first got word of two proposals under consideration. One would ban the buses from the 25-square-block area around Alamo Square, while the second would allow enclosed buses only on Hayes Street between Divisadero and Webster streets. In both scenarios, employer buses would be exempted. Also, an existing tour bus drop-off location on Fell Street would be moved from Divisadero to Pierce. According to a document prepared for the SFMTA Board, earlier this year the SFMTA observed large buses passing through Alamo Square roughly once every 7.5 minutes. A third of those buses were employer shuttles, while two thirds were tour buses and vans. The SFMTA documented bad behavior by the buses, including:
  • Delaying traffic and transit by slowing or stopping on Hayes Street
  • Parking in Muni stops or blocking driveways
  • Using amplified sound to provide narration to passengers
  • Generating loud engine noise, particularly when climbing hills
  • Crossing lanes of oncoming traffic when making wide right turns
  • Releasing noxious emissions
So today at 1pm, the SFMTA Board of Directors will decide which plan, if either, to approve. Today's meeting takes place in Room 400 at City Hall, and is open to the public. If approved, the new rules would go into effect 31 days from today. We'll update when we find out what the SFMTA decides.
