We reported a few weeks back that the Castro was getting a gay arcade bar currently code named "Project 22" to be located at the groundfloor of the new Century build at 15th and Market. The plan was to have it filled with arcade machines from Pac Man to pinball and serve beer and mocktails. Due to an old SF Police Department code, however, the amount of "mechanical amusement devices" allowed for the square footage of "Project 22" was limited to 10. The new bar's owner was hoping to get at least twice that many in. The police code restricting the machines was meant to crack down on arcade game addicts who were stirring up trouble in the 80's, according to SF Examiner. Supervisor Scott Wiener and Supervisor London Breed have been working to lift this old restriction now that the threat of rioting arcade gamers has disappeared with the move of gaming to mobile devices and home consoles. London Breed has a business in her district that is thriving because of the addition of 34 pinball machines, but is only allowed to have 6 according to the code and is therefore in violation. Supervisor Scott Wiener announced on his Twitter account today that the Board of Supervisors passed the legislation he and Breed put forth, "making SF safe for arcade games."
