Retail Life In The Haight: A 2014 Check-InPhotos: Camden Avery/Hoodline
The Haight can sometimes feel like a revolving door of shops and restaurants. What with all the hustle, we thought it was a good opportunity to check in with some of 2014's latest additions.

Piper's Shoe Parlor has been open under the guidance of new owner Kipling Rowe for six months now, and is making preparations to slide into the holiday season. We spoke with Rowe for a moment about the store, and Haight Street, and what we can expect to see at Piper's this fall.

"I love this street," said Rowe, who grew up here. "There's the combination of the new part of San Francisco, but it also has a pleasantly gritty feel ... there's still a lot of street culture here."

One thing she likes about the street so far is the niche offerings of the different shops in such close proximity, and the way Piper's is able to fit into that ecosystem. "We want to be bold, but we also want to be comfortable."

To celebrate the change in seasons, Piper's is currently running a 20% off boots special. The shop will also host a custom clog party on October 23rd, from 6pm, featuring Maguba swedish clogs, wine, a design-your-own-clogs option, and 20% discounts. If you want to get some shoes made, email Kipling at kipling [at] pipersshoes {dot} com.

Rowe expects Piper's to roll out roughly one event per month for neighborhood residents, including a fall and holiday preview show to debut new seasonal offerings like Pendleton blankets, trail soap and colognes from Juniper Ridge, menswear, seasonal odds and ends — "something for everyone," Rowe said.

Piper's is open 11am-7pm Sunday through Thursday, and 11am-8pm Friday and Saturday.

There's also The Fizzary at 1782 Haight, the newest location for the San Franicsco specialty soda and candy shop. It's been open in the Haight for almost a year, with every sign of rolling full steam ahead. The Fizzary's opening followed the original Mission location by a year; it's the second storefront for co-owners Aaron Dolson and Taylor Peck. (Photo: The Fizzary)

The Fizzary is open 11am-7pm Sunday through Thursday, and 11am-8pm Friday and Saturday.

Burton Snowboards' flagship store at 1640 Haight Street opened mid-December last year and is up and ready for a strong second Christmas. Employee Simone Margulies, who's been with Burton for three years, said Haight Street is treating Burton really well.

"We love it," Margulies said. "We're really stoked to be open in the Bay Area."

She also said Burton would be hosting a winter launch later in October or early in November, which will give shoppers a season preview of new boards and outerwear, replete with a music-and-drinks celebration.

Burton is open 11am-6pm Sundays, 11am-7pm Monday through Thursday, and 11am-8pm Fridays and Saturdays.

Other new arrivals enjoying their first year in the 'hood include Street TacoPink + DolphinDiamond Supply Co. and Cukui. What else would make the Upper Haight complete?
