Market & Octavia Area Gets New AT&T Cell SitePhoto: Emily Hoyer/Flickr
And now for a neighborhood cellular service update, courtesy of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company.

According to AT&T, the company "has activated a new 4G mobile Internet cell site in the Lower Haight [sic] area of San Francisco that will enhance coverage for area residents and businesses and provide speeds up to four times faster than 3G."

The new site "is designed to provide an enhanced customer experience to the area bounded by Rose Street, Laguna Street, Duboce Avenue, Otis Street, and Brady Street with a focus on Market Street." So, not really Lower Haight, but rather in the ambiguous lower Hayes Valley/ Central Freeway ramp/northern Valencia Street region.

In case that's hard to visualize, here's the area mapped:

The new antennae, which join long-awaited cell towers established on Steiner Street early last year, are part of the company's multi-year plan to deploy "small cell technology, macro cells and additional DAS" (distributed antenna systems) to increase the density of its wireless network. According to a press release, "The wireless network densification will further improve network quality and increase spectrum efficiency."

There you have it, folks: "densification" has come to an area near you, so if you're an AT&T customer passing through the area, your service should theoretically be better now. Let us know if you notice a difference.
