Much like our local sewer system, the neighborhood calendar runneth over this week. And though the big event — the Lower Haight Art Walk — doesn't arrive until Saturday, there's plenty of action to be had before then. Starting tonight, in fact.
First up, if you're a two-wheeled commuter, keep an eye out for the SF Bicycle Coalition as they host their annual Light Up The Night event. From 5:30pm to 7:30pm they'll be stationed somewhere in the neighborhood, distributing and installing free front and rear lights in an effort to keep cyclists visible and safe. As we explained last year, organizers keep the exact location a secret to deter all but the truly needy customers, but somewhere along the Wiggle is probably a safe bet.
Then, pedal over to Merch (629 Haight) from 7pm to 10pm for a group art show featuring a handful of Lower Haight regulars. "Darlings and Beastlings" will showcase colorful new works by artists Martin Hsu, Emma SanCartier, and Alice Koswara from the Lower Haters days. The opening reception is tonight, while the show will be up at Merch through January 31st.
Later, enjoy the sounds of the Lower Haight's own Sunshine Jones at Underground SF, at the weekly music and dance event that is Bubble. The fun starts at 9pm with the debut of some new DJing skills by Bubble co-founder Buckner, followed (and joined) by Jones thereafter. The event is free and 21+, as usual.
Finally, if you just can't wait for Saturday, get a taste of some of the art shows that have gone up around the neighborhood recently:
"San Francisco Found," a collection of vintage SF photographs, went up at Glass Key Photo (442 Haight) on Tuesday. The gallery is open this afternoon from noon to 6pm.
"Fred Lyon Photography," which is also a collection of vintage SF photographs, is hanging at the Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott). That's open today from 4pm to 8pm.
"AUTOMATON X," an installation by duo T.W. Five, went up at the Luggage Store Projects at 457 Haight in November. That space is open from noon to 5pm today, or by appointment.
So, plenty to do, especially for a Thursday. If you know of any other excitement going on in the hood this evening, let us know in the comments.
