With Daylight Savings Time now over, it's getting pretty dark out there for your two-wheeled evening commute. But if you don't have front and rear lights installed on your bike yet, you're in luck. The SF Bike Coalition will hook you up for free, tonight, right here in the Lower Haight.

By law, you're required to have a front white light installed either on your bike or on yourself. A rear red reflector is also required, though the Bike Coalition recommends installing a rear light for added visibility. To that end, they're partnering with the SFMTA to distribute hundreds of lights to bicyclists around the city. The annual campaign is called Light Up the Night!, and involves giveaways and installations at various S.F. locations in November and December. Tonight, the Lower Haight is the target neighborhood. From 5pm to 7:30pm, they'll be installing lights on bikes somewhere in the area. The exact location is kept secret "in an effort to light up riders who truly need lights," but it's probably a safe bet that it'll be somewhere along the Wiggle. So, keep an eye out. While the topic of bicycling always seems to stir lively debates around here, improving nighttime visibility of (and for) bicyclists is surely something we can all support. Right? Please?
