Preview Muni's Electric Trolley And Biodiesel-Electric Hybrid Buses Today At Boeddeker ParkImage via SFMTA.

Adding to your Earth Day to-do list, SFMTA announced this morning that Muni's new electric trolley and biodiesel-electric hybrid buses will be on display at Boeddeker Park at 11am today. It's a fitting viewing location, considering the neighborhood's significant air pollution problems

The new buses are part of SFMTA's five-year plan to replace its entire fleet of buses and increase reliability for nearly 700,000 weekday riders. The new buses are being purchased in waves between 2013 and 2019.

The agency purchased 60 electric trolley buses back in March 2014. The trolleys will operate on 100 percent hydro-electric power, which is carbon neutral and supplied from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, and are expected to hit the streets within the next month.

SFMTA also purchased 112 new biodiesel-electric hybrid buses in 2013, and debuted 62 of the buses in June of that year. SF Weekly got a good laugh when the bus on display at the press conference refused to start due to a back door issue.

Continuing the agency's mission to improve its fleet, Mayor Ed Lee announced in December of last year that SFMTA would purchase 61 hybrid diesel buses. According to the SFMTA's latest press release, those buses are "still undergoing a standard evaluation by Muni Operations prior to acceptance."

Earlier this month, SFMTA also announced its "most significant service improvements in decades", which also aim to improve Muni's reliability and will roll out this Saturday, April 25th. The improvements include enhancing frequency for a number of lines impacted by rush hour and launching a "Rapid Network" to increase frequency for the system's heaviest-used bus routes.

If you're interested in learning more about the new additions to the bus fleet, stop by Boeddeker Park this morning to chat with SFMTA Director of Transportation Ed Reiskin and Director of Transit John Haley, who will both be on hand to answer questions.
