Upper Haight Farmers Market Threatened By Low AttendancePhoto: PCFMA/Facebook

The Upper Haight Farmers Market, hosted by the Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association at the intersection of Waller and Stanyan, has struggled over the past year with anemic attendance.

After a slow and gradual start, the market continues to host only four or five vendors a week, despite adding a dedicated kids-and-family series of offerings every third Wednesday. As a result, regular patrons are concerned about the future of the market.

"Hey what's happening with the farmers market in Upper Haight?" reader Lisa H. asked Hoodline recently. "There is still only five vendors there and the choices are very poor. The soft opening that was reported in April with many more to come doesn't seem to have panned out."

Earlier this year, the association attempted to respond to customer priorities and neighborhood input about the market through a survey hosted by the Haight Ashbury Improvement Association, including which hours and types of vendors worked best.

But what it really comes down to, according to market manager Jeff Jelsma, is that there simply aren't enough customers showing up for the vendors to justify coming out and paying booth fees.

"This has become a weekly question from the few customers who faithfully come out every Wednesday, hoping there will be positive changes to their neighborhood market," Jelsma said in an email. "Unfortunately, declining customer counts have made the market unsustainable for producers, resulting in a smaller market every week."

So what does that mean for the market?

"We are at an impasse with the market. Customers will not come to a small market, and producers will not come to a market with low customer counts. We have attempted to bring more producers out, to little to no avail. We hope to continue providing the market to the Upper Haight community, but our farmers need more community support!"

In other words, if you want the market to stick around (and possibly expand its vendor lineup), encourage your neighbors to drop by. The Upper Haight market runs every Wednesday (that's today!) from 3-7pm.
