Police have quickly nabbed a suspect in Monday night's graffiti incident, which occurred at the French-American School on Oak Street. The graffiti, which depicted a symbol from the flag of the Five-Percent Nation, was initially being investigated as a possible hate crime.

This afternoon, SFPD announced that it had arrested 44-year-old Edward Vanwright,  described as a transient, on suspicion of the incident. Vanwright was spotted by Park Station officers near Masonic & Fulton; police say he matched the description of the vandal caught on video surveillance obtained from the scene.

"Investigators have determined that there was insufficient evidence to charge Vanwright with a hate crime," the SFPD stated in a press release. "The investigation did not reveal any connection to terrorism and there is no threat to the school, students, or staff."

Vanwright was booked on misdemeanor charges of trespassing and vandalism, and will also be charged with entering school grounds as a registered sex offender.
