Second Act's Newest Addition: Bulka BakeryPhotos: Bulka Bakery/Facebook

Back in August, we reported that Eatwell Farm's Ice Box would be leaving its stall at Second Act's marketplace (1727 Haight St.) to move on to bigger and better things. But starting next month, the vacant stall will have a new tenant: Bulka Bakery, owned and operated by Tatiana Kasatkina.

True to its name, Bulka Bakery will serve a variety of baked goods, including savory and sweet pastries and housemade bread. It'll also offer coffee, granola with yogurt, buckwheat cereal, sweet farmer’s cheese with berries and nuts, quiche, and hot pressed sandwiches for a lunch and dinner option.

Kasatkina has had success with pop-up shops in the past, and she's excited to fulfill her dream of opening a bakery. “To be at Second Act is a great start for me,” said Kasatkina. “It does not require a $100K or more investment to open a bake shop, and I can put different items on the menu to see what people like the most. It is going to be hard work and I cannot be more excited to get started!”

In addition to the new stall, Crêpe La Vie and Burma Bear recently celebrated one year anniversaries at Second Act, in September and November, respectively.

“Now that we are approaching our year two of this food entrepreneurial experiment, we can proudly say it’s working,” said owners Jack and Betsy Rix, who celebrated the marketplace's first year in business in February. “We truly feel that a new community in the Haight is being built. In fact, we were introduced to the owner of Bulka Bakery from one of our original marketplace partners, Anna from Anda Piroshki.”

As to Bulka Bakery, “We are thrilled to add another delectable food option that will please anyone who visits Second Act,” they said.

No hard date for opening has been set, but, as always, we'll let you know. Congrats to Jack and Betsy Rix, and here's to the arrival of a much-longed-for bakery in the Haight.
