Sol Disciples Opens Shop In Former Cukui SpacePhoto: Camden Avery/Hoodline

A week ago today, Rene George opened the doors at Sol Disciple's first brick and mortar shop in the former Cukui storefront, at 1429 Haight St.

George, the founder and owner of Sol Disciples, which has been in business in the Bay Area for two years, said he's excited to be open for business in the Haight.

Sol Disciples features an array of military-inspired jackets, t-shirts, hats, and accessories ranging in price from $35 to $150.

Sol Disciples joins the battery of Haight St. brands that coexist under the catchall of "urban streetwear": TrueDiamond Supply Co., Black Scale, Pink + Dolphin, Fresh, Traffic, and Cookies, which together have established a scene for urban streetwear in the Haight.

As to joining that scene, George said he was excited to contribute to it.

"If I thought we couldn't add something different," he said, "I wouldn't do it." He said that all the stores in the Haight have niche offerings for their shoppers.

"It's more than just an opportunity," George said yesterday at the store. "I grew up coming to the Haight, spending time here, shopping here."

For him, George said, "it's all about the community."
