The Haight's 4/20 Preparations Are Underway: Street Closures And What To ExpectPhoto: Via SFCitizen

If you're a veteran of the Haight, you're probably intimately familiar with the semi-organized havoc that unofficial marijuana-related festivities wreak on the 'hood every April 20th.

In recent years, especially with the event falling on the weekend, the chaos has been intense enough to draw attention from District 5 Supervisor London Breed and SFPD Park Station. The event has drawn as many as 15,000 people in some years, with around 10,000 people attending last year, according to Park Station police estimates.

The uptick in attendance over the past few years has resulted in traffic interruptions, mountains of garbage, and a strain on public toilets. As a result, Supervisor Breed has begun coordinating with various city departments to ensure a safe, minimally chaotic 4/20.

Measures put in place last year included portable toilets brought in for the day, a concerted cleanup effort (including 40 volunteers from local dispensary Green Cross), and additional manpower brought in by the SFPD from other districts.

"What [Breed] does is she makes sure that all of the different departments that deal with [4/20] have enough resources," including the SFPD, SFMTA, and DPW, said Breed's legislative aide, Vallie Brown.

Brown said that a committee was in place to work with Park Station Captain John Sanford to ensure safe policing, and to work with District 1 to deal with traffic issues that will impact adjacent neighborhoods. The goal is to have a publicized list of measures in place for this year's festivities by early April, including a list of city phone numbers that residents can call for issues.

In a recent email from Park Station, Capt. Sanford detailed a list of traffic closures expected to be put in place on 4/20. (The list of traffic closures initially announced last year was eventually reduced, only covering Haight Street intersections from Ashbury to Shrader.) According to the announcement, non-pedestrian access would only be granted to residents with proof of residency.

Here are the expected closures for this year:

  • no westbound traffic on Haight or Page past Masonic
  • no northbound traffic towards Haight (from Waller) between Shrader and Ashbury
  • no southbound traffic towards Haight (from Oak) between Shrader and Ashbury

Traffic routes to be impacted around Sharon Meadow are as follows:

  • the Fell Street entrance to Golden Gate Park at Stanyan will be closed, with all westbound traffic diverting north on Stanyan
  • JFK and Kezar Drive will be closed westbound and eastbound, respectively
  • Frederick Street at Kezar will be closed westbound (westbound routes south of Frederick will be open)
  • Stanyan Street northbound from Frederick will be closed

We'll keep you posted with further announcements from Supervisor Breed's office and SFPD Park Station.
