Last Friday, July 1st marked the first day of business for Haight Gallery, a brand-new gallery devoted to local artists. The gallery is operating out of 1780 Haight St., which was most recently occupied by the Body of the Sheep, a T-shirt shop that closed earlier this spring after three years in business.
We dropped in last week to speak with Abe, one of the gallery's managers, and Sarah Gil, one of the artists featured in the gallery for its opening.
Current offerings at the gallery include a mix of original works and prints, as well as photographs of San Francisco landmarks. Gil and Abe said they're looking to expand the gallery's offerings gradually, and plan to focus on work by local artists with a different, Haight-appropriate vibe.
Gil and Abe said they're excited to be the Upper Haight's only devoted art gallery. "We have a lot of different prints right now," Gil said. "We're sort of trying to get a feel for what people like."
Gil said the gallery is less dedicated to featuring narrowly specific kinds of art than it is to offering an array of local artists' work. "We're trying to do different things," she said.
Abe said Haight Gallery will be open seven days a week from noon-7pm, with some late-night openings for local artists to mingle and chat. A grand opening hasn't been scheduled yet, but they're shooting for sometime in late August. We'll keep you posted on details.
