Slice House, From Pizza Star Tony Gemignani, Headed To The Haight

Haight Street pizza lovers have cause to rejoice this week.

As noted by tipster Geoff G., the former Big Slice Pizza at 1535 Haight St., which shuttered suddenly last month for an overhaul, is to reopen as a new addition to the pizza empire of local pie pro Tony Gemignani. Best known for North Beach's ever-popular Tony's Pizza Napoletana, Gemignani has taken home a dozen top honors in international pizza competitions, as well as the title of "best pizzeria in American" by Forbes in 2014.

The new Haight Street spot, which has already hung its sign, will be the sixth location for Gemignani's casual Slice House concept, which includes locations on Second Street, at AT&T Park, and most recently, in Walnut Creek.

The new addition is sure to shake up the pizza scene in the neighborhood, currently anchored by Escape From New York, and affected three years ago by the departure of Giovanni Iaccarino's signature pies from Club Deluxe.

A spokesperson for Gemignani said they have nothing to announce at this time, so for the moment, we have no details on an opening date.

But we can report that the Second Street location of Slice House offers pizza by the slice, as well as salads, pasta, and a range of artisan grain pies for $24, including the Cal Italia, which took home the gold medal in the Food Network's Pizza Champions Challenge.

Thanks to tipster Geoff G.
