'El Macho' Brings Oaxacan Fare To TelegraphPhoto: Miriam W./Yelp

A new Mexican spot has opened for business in the neighborhood. Located at 6228 Telegraph Ave. (between 62nd & 63rd streets) in Rockridge, the fresh addition is called El Macho.

The taqueria—which recently took over the space formerly occupied by Nude Sushi—is serving up traditional Oaxacan cuisine with a menu comprised of tacos, burritos, fajitas, and mole.

For the tacos and burritos, you can choose from an array of options like fish, shrimp, asada, chicken, veggies, or birria (goat or mutton stew).

There's four flavors of mole on offer as well, including red, green, black, and yellow, with a range of spice levels.  The base mole includes nuts, fruits, chiles, cinnamon, hoja santa, and chocolate; yellow mole contains all of the above minus the chocolate.

If you're looking for something a little different, try the tostada de tinga with marinated chipotle chicken.

El Macho has already attracted fans thus far, with a 4.5-star rating out of five reviews on Yelp.

Torre M., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on August 17th, said: "This place is the real deal! You would think [you're] in Oaxaca region of Mexico. I've tried the tamales and they are by far the best I've had in USA."

And Dan B. said: "It's a responsibility being the first reviewer of a new restaurant, but it's made much easier when the food is delicious, presentation is beautiful, the people were friendly."

El Macho (510-547-6833) is open Monday–Saturday from 5pm–midnight, closed Sunday.
