San Francisco continues to grapple with a surge in ATM thefts. Thieves are striking businesses across the city, resulting in damaged storefronts and growing concern among business owners.
Thefts, such as the one early Sunday morning highlighted by the San Francisco Chronicle, where criminals broke into a Walgreens and left a damaged ATM on the sidewalk, are happening more frequently. Previously, in mid-September, a truck was driven into a CVS pharmacy, and an ATM was broken open. In October, robbers who stole the ATM broke into Happy Donuts in Noe Valley and demanded cash from the staff.
A report by Mission Local states that police identified matching descriptions of vehicles and suspects from Walgreens and a previous gas station burglary. When the police attempted to stop the cars, however, the drivers refused to pull over and escaped, leaving the culprits unrestrained.
