University of Miami to Debut Taylor Swift Business and Branding Course This FallSource: Google Street View

The University of Miami is set to introduce a new course this fall exploring the business and branding savvy of pop superstar Taylor Swift. The elective, named "Strategically Communicating Through Music: The Mastermind of the Taylor Swift Brand," is open to all students regardless of their major, aiming to dissect how the singer-songwriter built her billion-dollar brand, WSVN reports.

The class, orchestrated by Dr. Alyse Renee Lancaster, to quickly become a forte among students, will delve into Swift's use of advertising, social media, and strategic development to cement her place in the industry. These topics are indeed particularly resonant in her music, with singles like 'You Need to Calm Down' indirectly preaching on the perils and powers of social media. Dr. Lancaster explained to WSVN, "It’s gonna be using her business prowess, using her experience, using her lyrics, using her music, and using her brand and how she has successfully built it into a billion-dollar brand to help students understand how they can do that when they are out working for clients."

Aiming to analyze Swift’s narrative methods, the course will also focus on the singer's knack for connecting with fans via her personal experiences and emotions. "She captures specific moments and feelings," sophomore English major Charlotte Steffian told The Miami Hurricane, appreciating Swift as a storyteller.

The Miami Hurricane also reported that Dr. Lancaster found inspiration for the course while listening to Swift's music during a workout session. Since then, she has been fervently working to shape a syllabus that's as dynamic and engaging as Swift's career. As the class promises to unravel the strategic communications behind Swift's ascension, there's a hint of excitement in Lancaster's voice: "Every time I hear one of her songs, listen to one of her interviews or see a photo of her and Travis Kelce, more ideas for the class come to me, and the syllabus continues to evolve," she told The Miami Hurricane.

While some may dismiss a course centered on a pop icon as trivial, Lancaster sees a valuable lesson in Swift's success. "It’s impossible to talk about Taylor Swift and not have fun, because spreading joy is, in essence, what Taylor Swift’s brand is all about," Lancaster said, according to The Miami Hurricane. She argues that the uplift brought by studying Swift is a counterbalance to today's global tensions and student stress.

For Swift fans and strategy enthusiasts alike, the course is set to kick off in the 2024 fall semester. As registrations open on April 1, students keen on snagging a spot in this coveted class are advised to be swift, given the limited seats available.
