Architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox is at the helm of design for the UMCI, which is going to be positioned at the juncture of Grand River Avenue and West Columbia Street, this site represents a strategic point within Detroit's resurgence narrative, UM officials said the center would spark a nexus of education, research, and societal advancement. Hana Kassem, a design principal with the firm, underscored in a statement obtained by UM News that the UMCI's blueprint reflects the University of Michigan's ethos—celebrating progress and inclusivity with a cutting-edge, welcoming structure aimed to forge a ‘gateway for innovation.’

The comprehensive details of the center radiate a commitment to accessibility and collaborative spirit. On the first two layers of the UMCI, passerby will encounter a multitude of public programs, mingling spaces like a cafe, and office areas for university-linked entities like the School of Environment and Sustainability Clinic. Higher up, intensive graduate research will make its home on levels three through six. This structure, as reported by Crain's Detroit Business, is just the first piece of a larger three-building plan, with future structures geared towards incubation and residential purposes.

UM Provost Laurie McCauley hailed the UMCI initiative as a cornerstone for Detroit's economic progress, "UMCI will bring together the best of the University of Michigan to catalyze economic development in the city of Detroit," McCauley told Detroit News, and the center will house a comprehensive collection of academic offerings from advanced degrees to workforce development programs, tasked with equipping individuals with the ever-essential skills of tomorrow—crucial artifacts to lure startups and stalwart employers alike.
