ARTS at King Street Station Redefines Seattle Cultural Scene with Focus on Diversity and InclusionSource: Google Street View

Seattle's doing the arts differently, focusing on people of color and making a splash over at King Street Station. It’s not just about train times and ticket lines anymore, as the ARTS at King Street Station is ramping up to be the go-to spot for diverse local talent, making strides in the cultural scene.

Delving into the nitty-gritty, this hub perched above the historic station spans 7,500 square feet of gallery space, an artist haven  - there’s an actual working studio for artists-in-residence, plus offices for the city's Office of Arts & Culture. After some citywide soul-searching and community jaw-jabbing back in 2018, the peeps spoke up for a space that’s both an art joint and a community builder, all seen through the lens of race and social justice, which by the way, needed to happen, this report is not gathering dust on some bureaucrat's desk.

Fast forward and the KSS Advisors are the ones pulling the strings, with a dozen brains behind a steering wheel that desperately needed a new direction, guiding the cultural programs with a clear-eyed focus on equity. With a gig lasting two years and an open door to stick around longer, these advisors give their two cents on picking the art, curating events, stirring up the artist residency to be more than mediocre, and getting word out beyond the same old crowds.

A recent announcement, they're on the scout again for advisors to keep this train on the track.
