Residents Warned of Burglars Posing as Utility Workers in 8th and 9th DistrictsSource: Facebook/Chicago Police Department

Residents of Chicago's 8th and 9th Districts have been put on high alert as a spike in burglary incidents continues to unsettle local communities. According to a community alert issued by the Chicago Police Department, these burglars are scheming residents by posing as utility workers or home repairmen to gain entry and fleece their unsuspecting targets.

The ploy involves the offenders approaching homeowners with offers of home improvements or claims of affiliation with the water department, to access the homes and pilfer belongings. Such incidents have taken place throughout April, at various times and locations across the neighborhoods - including the recent breach in the afternoon on the 3800 Block of West 61th Street and midday invasions on South Leavitt Street and South Keeler Avenue.

Suspects include a male white Hispanic in his 40s or 50s, recognizable by the tattoos on his face and neck, and a similarly aged female white Hispanic with black hair and a light brown complexion. They have been seen wearing distinctive attire such as a dark blue cap and a New York baseball cap for the male, and an orange peach long-sleeve shirt for the female.

Police are urging residents to remain vigilant by keeping properties well-lit and all potential entrances secured. They also advise not to touch anything in the event of becoming a victim of such a crime and to call the police immediately. "Report suspicious activity immediately," the police warning indicates, with a special emphasis on the preservation of surveillance footage for investigative purposes. When approached by someone asking to do work or to check on utilities, homeowners should always request identification and verify credentials before allowing access.
