In a swift response to a midnight discharge of a firearm in Southeast DC, Metropolitan Police Department officers apprehended an 18-year-old suspect following a brief investigation. The incident, which erupted in the 1700 block of Independence Avenue Southeast on April 22, involved gunfire but fortunately did not result in any casualties or property damage.
Just minutes into the early morning, around 2:18 a.m., the sounds of gunfire prompted First District officers to spring into action, canvassing the area for signs of the shooter. The scene bore evidence of the crime but remained devoid of victims, an all too familiar narrative in urban areas grappling with gun violence.
Technological prowess lent a hand when investigators from MPD's Real Time Crime Center leveraged nearby camera footage. This quickly propelled the case forward, aiding officers in zeroing in on a suspect. The breakthrough led them to a nearby residence where they made a critical arrest.
Inside, police found and detained Amontae Moody, a Southeast DC resident. Along with the suspect, a firearm was also recovered at the scene - a stark reminder of the incident's potential for harm. According to MPD's official release, Moody now faces charges of Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm and Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, a grim testament to the prevailing challenges law enforcement faces in the continued combat against gun-related crimes.
