An SUV crashed into the parking lot of a Lakewood Starbucks and caught fire Monday, killing one person and shutting down the busy Southside spot while first responders locked down the scene.
Crash and response
According to Action News Jax, the single-vehicle crash happened early Monday in the Lakewood shopping area. Jacksonville Fire Rescue crews put out the flames, and a person was later pronounced dead at the scene. The outlet reported that officials had not released the victim's identity at the time of publication.
Where it happened
The Starbucks is listed at 1500 University Blvd W in Lakewood Plaza, a retail hub near the intersection of San Jose Boulevard and University Boulevard. Online business directories, including MapQuest, place the store and its drive-through in a densely trafficked commercial cluster.
Investigation underway
Police remained on scene to sort out what led to the crash, keeping portions of the parking lot and nearby lanes closed while they gathered evidence. Action News Jax reported that authorities had not said whether speed, impairment or a medical emergency might have been involved.
Traffic safety context
Crashes that trigger vehicle fires in tight shopping-center lots are especially hazardous for people inside the car and anyone nearby, and the damage can make it harder for investigators to piece together the sequence of events. Recent local coverage has pointed to a series of deadly wrecks across Jacksonville that have raised alarms about traffic safety on major corridors; see late-night Dunn Avenue crash coverage for additional context.
How to help
Anyone who saw the crash or has video from the area is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at 904-630-0500. Additional information on submitting tips or evidence is available on the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office website. Officials are asking anyone with firsthand footage to keep it intact for investigators.
