A late-night walk across Dunn Avenue turned deadly Sunday when a Jacksonville man was hit by an SUV on the city’s Northside and later died at the hospital, authorities said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 11 p.m. east of Biscayne Boulevard. Troopers told News4JAX that a 47-year-old man driving an SUV eastbound on Dunn Avenue struck a pedestrian who stepped into the vehicle's path. Investigators said the driver tried to swerve away but could not avoid the impact. Emergency crews took the pedestrian to a hospital, where he later died.
Where It Happened
Dunn Avenue, designated as State Road 104, is a roughly 7.6-mile corridor across Jacksonville's Northside that connects US-1 and US-17 and links with both I-295 and I-95, according to AARoads. Because it is a state road, the Florida Department of Transportation and state troopers typically handle traffic safety issues and crash investigations along the route.
Local Calls For Pedestrian Safety
The deadly crash comes as no surprise to some Northside residents who have been sounding the alarm about pedestrian safety along Dunn Avenue for years. In August 2025, News4JAX reported on a mother who pushed for crossing guards and pedestrian lights near a charter school after a teenager was killed nearby. “I don’t want this to happen again. I really don’t, because no parent should have to bury their child,” she told the station.
Investigation And Next Steps
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into Sunday night’s crash and will release a full report once its review is complete.
