The Tiki-est Tiki Bars In AustinPhoto: Hula Hut/Facebook

The old-school tiki revival that's swept the nation is still waiting to stake out a piece of paradise in Austin. But if you're willing to extend a little mahalo spirit, there are a few spots around the area offering top-notch tiki drinks, special tiki nights or other tropical elements. Here are four bars where you can enjoy some island flavor.

The Doke

Holding down the fort on Lake Austin since 1993, this waterfront paradise is the place to go for tropical drinks with a view. Popular options include the Grass Skirt (coconut rum, melon liqueur and pineapple juice) and the Blue Hawaii (coconut rum, blue curaçao and pineapple juice). Your day by the water will be soundtracked with traditional Hawaiian and surf-rock tunes, and you can even order up a Tex-Mex-meets-Hawaiian pu pu platter, with coconut shrimp and flautas.

This neighborhood charmer hosts regular happy-hour Tiki Tuesdays, where you have your choice of two tiki cocktails for just $7 from 4-7pm. Can't choose between the mai tai (rum, curaçao, orgeat syrup and lime juice) and the Painkiller (dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juice)? Order one of each, along with some eats from the rotating cast of food trucks.

It may feel more speakeasy than tiki, but the Roosevelt Room's commitment to offering authentic period drinks means that it's actually one of the best places in town to enjoy legitimate tiki cocktails from the '50s golden age. Options range fromJungle Bird (rum, pineapple, Campari, lime) to the Suffering Bastard (gin, cognac, lime, Angostura bitters, and ginger beer). Just be sure to go easy with the Zombie—an ultra-boozy drink that's worthy of its name.

Shangri-La
East Austin

Shangri-La may not be a tiki bar per se, but it fits into the category of a "tiki dive," thanks to a leafy back patio with strings of lights and a small second bar/hut. The house specialty is frozen drinks packed with plenty of rum and garnished with mini umbrellas, like the Shangri-Lada (with pina colada puree) or the Mango Unchained (with mango puree). There's often live music on the patio, and on Sunday nights, you can even drop by for a free game of pool.
