Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending right now?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to analyze which restaurants have been getting a noteworthy uptick in attention this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at Denver businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Mas Kaos Pizzeria & Taqueria

Open since May, this popular spot to score pizza and tacos is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "pizza" on Yelp.

Citywide, pizza spots saw review counts increase by a median of 2.2 percent over the past month, but MAS KAOS Pizzeria & Taqueria saw a 21.4 percent increase, with a slight upward trend from a 3.5-star rating a month ago to four stars today. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis review counts increased by more than 280 percent.

It's not the only trending outlier in the pizza category: Pieology Pizzeria has seen a 16.4 percent increase in reviews.

Located at 4526 Tennyson St. in Berkeley, MAS KAOS Pizzeria & Taqueria offers specialty wood-fired pizza, tacos and traditional pasta dinners.

STK Denver

Lower Downtown's STK Denver is also making waves. Open since January 2017 at 1550 Market St., the cocktail bar, steakhouse and New American spot has seen an 8.7 percent bump in reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 2.6 percent for all businesses tagged "American (New)" on Yelp. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis review counts increased by more than 570 percent.

STK Denver is serving up seafood, steaks and entrees such as rack of lamb and pork chops. Over the past month, it's maintained a strong four-star rating among Yelpers.

Agave Taco Bar

Washington Park's Agave Taco Bar is the city's buzziest Mexican spot by the numbers.

The popular bar and Mexican spot, which opened at 2217 E. Mississippi Ave. in the summer of 2013, increased its review count by 4.9 percent over the past month, an outlier when compared to the median review increase of 2.4 percent for the Yelp category "Mexican." It outperformed the previous month by gaining 6.0 times more reviews than expected based on past performance.

It's not the only trending outlier in the Mexican category: Kachina Cantina - Denver has seen a 6.2 percent increase in reviews.

Agave Taco Bar offers tacos, burros, tamales and salads. Mexican beers and cocktails, including margaritas, are also on the menu.
