The Maltese Falcon

A private detective takes on a case that involves him with three eccentric criminals, a gorgeous liar and their quest for a priceless statuette.

Boasting a Tomatometer Score of 100 percent and an Audience Score of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, this vintage film has been a favorite of critics. The Hollywood Reporter said, "On a number of accounts it is distinguished celluloid entertainment, but it is of great interest to the trade because it reveals, in startling terms, the unheralded talent of topflight scenarist, John Huston."

Booksmart

Two academic teenage superstars realize, on the eve of their high school graduation, that they should have worked less and played more. Determined to never fall short of their peers, the girls set out on a mission to cram four years of fun into one night.

Set to be released on Friday, May 24, "Booksmart" already has a Tomatometer Score of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Actor-turned-director Olivia Wilde (shockingly, this is her behind-the-camera feature debut) shows off something rarer than technique or comic timing. She's got loads of compassion and has somehow managed to make a high-school movie without villains," according to Joshua Rothkopf of Time Out, while RogerEbert.com's Brian Tallerico said, "It's smart, so very funny, and beautifully directed by Olivia Wilde."

It's opening on Thursday, May 23, at AMC Kips Bay 15 (570 Second Ave.), Regal UA Kaufman Astoria & RPX (35-30 38th St.) and AMC Lincoln Square 13 (1998 Broadway). Click here for showtimes and tickets.

On the Waterfront

Terry Malloy dreams about being a prize fighter, while tending his pigeons and running errands at the docks for Johnny Friendly, the corrupt boss of the dockers union. Terry witnesses a murder by two of Johnny's thugs, and later meets the dead man's sister and feels responsible for his death. She introduces him to Father Barry, who tries to force him to provide information for the courts that will smash the dock racketeers.

Boasting a Tomatometer Score of 98 percent and an Audience Score of 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, this vintage film is a must-see. The Hollywood Reporter's Jack Moffitt said, "This brutal, violently realistic drama, set against the sordid background of the New York waterfront, packs a terrific wallop that results in topflight entertainment."

You can catch it at City Cinemas Beekman Theatre (1271 Second Ave.) on Monday, May 20. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

The Wizard of Oz

Young Dorothy finds herself in a magical world where she makes friends with a lion, a scarecrow and a tin man as they make their way along the yellow brick road to talk with the Wizard and ask for the things they miss most in their lives. The Wicked Witch of the West is the only thing that could stop them.

Boasting a Tomatometer Score of 98 percent and an Audience Score of 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, this old-school film is a critical darling. The New York Daily News' Kate Cameron said, "Judy Garland is perfectly cast as Dorothy. She is as clever a little actress as she is a singer and her special style of vocalizing is ideally adapted to the music of the picture," while Keith Staskiewicz of Entertainment Weekly stated, "In truth, any opportunity to see the film on the big screen is welcome."

In the mood for popcorn? It's playing at Stuart Cinema & Cafe (79 West St.) on Monday, May 20. Click here for showtimes and tickets.
