New Chelsea Middle Eastern spot Qanoon opens its doorsPhoto: Qanoon/Yelp

A new Middle Eastern and Mediterranean spot has opened its doors in the neighborhood. The newcomer to Chelsea, called Qanoon, is located at 180 Ninth Ave.

For this new restaurant, chef and owner Tarek Daka was inspired by his childhood spent on a farm in Palestine and by the traditional, family-style meals he remembers enjoying there.

The menu at Qanoon (which gets its name from the Arabic word for grill) features shareables like fresh hummus and labneh balls; appetizers like green lentil croquettes and fried kibbeh (bulgur balls filled with ground beef and spices); and entrees like Palestinian kofta and makloubeh — a rice and lamb dish prepared in a ramekin, whose name translates to “upside-down” for the way the ramekin is flipped onto the plate before serving. For dessert, check out the homemade knafeh (Palestinian cheesecake) finished with rose and orange blossom water.

The new arrival has proven popular thus far, with a four-star rating out of 21 reviews on Yelp.

Franny A., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Sept. 20, wrote, "Everything was exotic and delicious."

Yelper Liz L. noted, “Outstanding food and a great addition to the neighborhood!!!"

Interested? Stop by to welcome the new business to the neighborhood. Qanoon is currently open from 5-11 p.m. daily, with plans to add lunch service.
