A tragedy struck over the Thanksgiving weekend as a small aircraft crashed in Irion County, claiming the lives of three San Antonio residents, including a young scholar from the Comal Independent School District, KSAT reports. The victims, identified as Jeremy Alan Sanchez, his wife Alyse Marie Sanchez, and their daughter Katrina Sanchez, were pronounced dead after their Piper PA-28 went down near Mertzon, a small community roughly 30 miles southwest of San Angelo, around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Details surrounding the crash are sparse, but it is known that Jeremy Sanchez, a licensed private pilot, had the small plane registered under his and his wife's names; the National Transportation Safety Board is in the throes of investigation, trying to piece together the moments that led to the fatal incident; Jeremy Alan Sanchez and Alyse Marie Sanchez of San Antonio were named by KSAT as the registered owners of the Piper PA 28; and flight records tracked the ill-fated journey from Las Cruces, New Mexico, to a landing in Fort Stockton, Texas, before its last known stop in Reagan County.

In the wake of the crash, Specht Elementary School, where Katrina was a fifth-grader, mourned the unexpected loss of their student and her family. “The faculty and staff of Specht Elementary and the entire Comal ISD family are deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our fifth-grade students, Katrina Sanchez, and her parents,” a heart-wrenching post shared by the school, according to Express News. The tight-knit school community is scheduled to honor Katrina’s memory by wearing her favorite color, purple, on Friday, inviting everyone to join in a collective gesture of shared grief and remembrance of the young life cut tragically short.
