Mi Gente Ignites San Antonio Culinary Scene with Modern Tex-Mex in Former Martha's VenueSource: Google Street View

The newly opened Mi Gente is spicing up San Antonio's food scene with a fusion of classic Tex-Mex and modern flavors in the former location of a local favorite. The space that previously housed Martha's Mexican Restaurant is now a hub for inventive dishes after restaurateur Javier Barron decided to close Martha's last year and make way for his new venture. According to a report by San Antonio Current, Mi Gente swung open its doors on January 12 with a promise to keep some of Martha's beloved dishes while introducing a contemporary twist to the Tex-Mex lineup.

Ready to quickly serve the Medical Center area, Mi Gente brings to the table an array of options that aim to capture the festive essence of the city. "We're closing the chapter on the traditional Tex-Mex and bringing in something modernized," Barron told  San Antonio Current . Mi Gente's gastronomic offerings are cosmopolitan yet grounded in local taste - think carne guisada enchiladas, garnished with a touch of San Antonio in the form of Hot Cheetos toppings.

Leveraging a unique combo of comfort and innovation, the menu at Mi Gente also features a variety of tacos, both traditional and remixed with creative flair. As detailed by Express News, the Carnelote taco, brimming with beef fajita and elote, and the Pollofrito taco, stuffed with fried chicken and queso, are just a sample of the novel twists diners can expect. For those with a penchant for indulgence, there are also carne guisada fries and chorizo-topped mac and cheese.

Addressing staffing challenges, Mi Gente has opted to shake up the service model, abandoning the traditional sit-down service for a counter-service format, creating an atmosphere that's as effervescent as their frozen margaritas. This shift also celebrates Barron's desire "to create a place where my people — mi gente — can come, enjoy good food and a fun atmosphere," as he explained in an interview with  San Antonio Current. Located at 5822 Babcock Road, Mi Gente's doors open as early as 9 a.m. on certain days, inviting San Antonio residents to add a little zest to their daily routine.
