The streets of Petaluma witnessed yet another instance of impaired driving when a DUI suspect barreled into a fire hydrant on the afternoon of January 15. Petaluma Police Department officers responded to the scene at the intersection of Petaluma Blvd S and Crystal Ln to find a white Ford F-150 lodged against the hydrant near a roundabout, as reported by the Petaluma Police Department.

Upon assessing the scene just before four in the afternoon, officers encountered Anthony Fires, 41, of Petaluma, behind the wheel. Displaying obvious signs of alcohol intoxication, Fires was quickly taken into custody and faced DUI charges. Despite the danger posed, it seems a swift operation by local law enforcement and fire personnel helped to quickly manage the situation and avert further risk to public safety.

Fires, determined to be the solo driver and occupant, avoided immediate incarceration as the arrest process included a necessary trip to the hospital for medical clearance. However, this delay didn't prevent the inevitable, as he was subsequently booked into the Sonoma County Jail.

In an ongoing effort to put a halt to such reckless behavior, the Petaluma Police Department has steadily ramped up its traffic safety initiatives, with a keen focus on stemming the tide of alcohol-related incidents.
