Gov. Abbott Mobilizes State Resources, Secures FEMA Grant Amidst Raging Wildfires in Texas PanhandleSource: Office of the Texas Governor

In the face of the roaring wildfires tearing through the Texas Panhandle, Governor Greg Abbott has put into motion an enhanced state emergency response, signaling for assistance from the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to support local firefighting efforts. According to a statement obtained by the Governor's office, Abbott has also initiated an increase in the Texas State Emergency Operations Center's readiness level, boosting it to Level II (Escalated Response).

"As dangerous wildfires continue to impact the Texas Panhandle, I directed TDEM to immediately deploy additional wildfire response resources to ensure the safety of Texans and impacted communities," Governor Abbott declared. Acknowledging the speedy federal assistance, he added, "Thank you to our federal partners at FEMA for quickly approving Texas' request for grant assistance, as we continue to fight these dangerous wildfires." He further called on Texans in affected areas to follow the counsel of local officials for their safety. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has also concurred with a Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Smokehouse Creek Fire and Windy Deuce Fire, securing a 75% reimbursement for the state's firefighting costs.

The Texas A&M Forest Service warns that grasses dried and frozen by the season pose a continued danger of spread. With a prediction of warmer and drier conditions ahead, the Service anticipates heightened wildfire activity throughout the weekend. In response, the A&M Forest Service amped up their Wildland Fire Preparedness Level to 3. The range of resources deployed includes over 95 firefighters, aircraft for aerial mapping, Search and Rescue teams, and more. Notably, the commitment totals 11 Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System strike teams featuring over 189 personnel with over 58 fire engines.

On top of this formidable array, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension has positioned Disaster Assessment and Recovery Agents to tend to agricultural and livestock needs. Meanwhile, the Texas National Guard has fielded a CH47 Chinook helicopter equipped for firefighting. Abbott’s proactive approach further extends to urging residents to report any wildfire property damage using the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool, a platform aimed at gauging the scope of damage for both homeowners and agricultural entities.

The efforts of this multi-pronged, coordinated response are critical, as communities come to grips with the wild, uncontrollable nature of fire that strikes at the heart of their safety and livelihood. Texans receiving this support are encouraged to remain vigilant, act per official directives, and maintain a cache of emergency supplies while staying up-to-date with safety information provided on TDEM's site.
