Iconic Dallas Steakhouse Owner Al Biernat Reveals Battle with ALS, Remains Hopeful Amid DiagnosisSource: Google Street View

A renowned figure in the Dallas dining scene, Al Biernat, has come forward with a personal and difficult announcement. At 68 years old, the man behind the iconic Al Biernat's steakhouse has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Speaking about his condition, Biernat has made it clear that despite the obstacles, he remains hopeful, "I want people to know," he told The Dallas Morning News.

As a testament to his commitment to service and community, even as he navigates through his illness, Biernat would like nothing more than to continue engaging with his diners — a hallmark of his near five decades in the industry. However, ALS has taken a toll on his ability to communicate, causing issues with his speech and swallowing, as noted in NBC DFW's report on his condition. The early onset of bulbar ALS, affecting his face and neck first, has doctors estimating a three-year life expectancy from the onset of symptoms in May 2023.

Despite stepping back from the forefront of daily restaurant interactions, Biernat's presence is still felt at his namesake establishment. The director of operations and Biernat’s nephew, Brad Fuller, is poised to maintain the standard of excellence established by his uncle. Fuller, who helped open the steakhouse in 1998 alongside Biernat, told The Dallas Morning News about his uncle’s influence, "Al has a special way of making everyone think they are the most important person in the room."

Moving forward, Biernat has chosen not to undergo a tracheotomy, understanding the progressive nature of his condition. His focus appears to be on living life amid his new normal, still active in attending meetings and performing daily routines. Communal support is also rallying, with Biernat's daughter, Angelica Saylor, collecting messages and memories at [email protected], as well as physical cards at 4217 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas, TX, 75219, c/o Al Biernat’s Personal. Biernat's legacy is clear—a tireless commitment to his community and steadfast resilience in facing life’s hardest challenges.
