Anaheim Aims to Revitalize Beach Boulevard, Begins with Demolition of Notorious MotelSource: City of Anaheim

The City of Anaheim is set to aggressively continue its efforts to revitalize Beach Boulevard by demolishing the former Anaheim Lodge motel, a site long plagued by criminal activities. Scheduled for demolition on Tuesday, this move comes as part of Anaheim's broader initiative to tackle crime and urban decay, and to re-envision Beach Boulevard as a neighborhood-friendly avenue with options for both living and leisure.

In what can be seen as a bid to quite literally pave the way for new beginnings, the city's actions will make room for the development of affordable apartments and townhomes, as confirmed by official statements. This lodged demolition marks Anaheim's third since 2021 and the fourth since 2002, underlining a determined trend to reshape the area.

Housing locals in conditions that many would deem unacceptable, the Anaheim Lodge was under the spotlight for a series of crimes, from human trafficking and prostitution to drug offenses and other violent incidents. The location saw a shocking 457 police calls and arrests in 2021, including a fatal shooting. The city's acquisition of the property, totaling $7.6 million in December 2022, was just another step in addressing what officials classify as nuisances and crimes, and providing safer alternatives for those who called the motel 'home'.

These developments, however, don't come without a human cost—the motel's closure affected several residents. "Twenty-nine adults and 10 children in 18 rooms were onsite when the motel was acquired," according to the city's announcement. While most were relocated, including 10 households moved to an extended-stay hotel, not all were able to receive assistance, with one individual being evicted for nonpayment of rent and declining offers of help.

The demise of the Anaheim Lodge, built in the early 1980s with a design that lacks the thematic and nostalgic flair of its 1960s and '70s predecessors, further represents the ongoing evolution of Beach Boulevard. As Anaheim clears these historic grounds, the city eagerly anticipates the inception of new and affordable housing developments which are expected to unfold throughout the current year, targeting 2025 for potential development commencement. This process will adhere to California's Surplus Land Act, emphasizing affordable housing as a priority for government-owned property.
