Arlington Firefighter Shot During Welfare Check Response, Suspected Shooter in CustodySource: City of Arlington, Texas

An Arlington firefighter was shot and seriously injured early Friday morning after a response to a call for a welfare check went awry. According to the City of Arlington, Texas, the incident occurred at approximately 12:43 a.m. when officers and firefighters arrived at an apartment complex on Bardin Greene Drive after a neighbor reported children crying for a long time.

Upon arrival, officers tried knocking on the door for several minutes, announcing their presence to make sure that the occupants, possibly in distress, knew help was at the door. Even though no one answered, the first responders were determined to gain entry due to the possibility of injury to the individuals inside. Officers decided to force entry amidst the continued wails of children, calling for their unresponsive mother, while a firefighter attempted to pry the door open.

In a sudden turn of events, a shot was fired from within the apartment, striking the firefighter, since identified as Brady Weaver by the Arlington Fire Department. According to the official statement, Weaver sustained serious injuries but managed to get himself to safety. He is currently stable and alert in an area hospital, and the community is urged to pray for his recovery.

Following the shooting, all personnel quickly moved to cover, and no further shots were reported. Commands were issued for the occupants to exit the apartment, leading to a man, woman and two children complying. Detained by authorities, the man is believed to be the shooter and is currently under interrogation. Details about whether charges will be filed are pending as the investigation continues in consultation with the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office.
