Detroit just got a little more glamorous. The city celebrated the grand opening of Pink Diamond, a new 9,000-square-foot beauty mall on Livernois Avenue. The ribbon-cutting ceremony saw Mayor Mike Duggan and officials from Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) welcome the innovative establishment designed to serve as a “one-stop shop” for beauty and wellness needs. Founded by Detroiter Katrina Belin, Pink Diamond boasts an array of services including salon treatments, manicures, facials, and more.
"Pink Diamond is a safe space for women to be able to come to release, relax and pretty much get away from all of the stresses and worries of the world," Belin shared. Her journey to this point is nothing short of inspiring. After a childhood marked by tragedy and time in the foster care system, Belin managed to carve out a success story. She aims to create an environment that brings joy and healing, and this was reflected in the ceremony, as guests got their first look at the establishment's serene sauna and meditation room.
In an effort to support local entrepreneurs, Pink Diamond was one of the businesses that received a financial boost from Motor City Match, scoring a $50,000 grant for renovations. The initiative is well-recognized for empowering business owners in Detroit, as Mayor Duggan pointed out during the event, saying that Livernois is becoming a hotspot for businesses operated by Motor City Match winners.
As reported by detroitmi.gov, Sean Gray, vice president of Small Business Services at DEGC, praised the beauty mall. "Pink Diamond is a rare gem, both literally and figuratively,” he noted. Katrina's personal triumph over significant obstacles to establish a place where women can "embrace their unique beauty, find inspiration and raise their self-perception" is seen as emblematic of the city's entrepreneurial spirit.
The broader community stands to benefit from Pink Diamond, with the business planning to expand its 13-member staff by hiring from the local community. Beyond the business itself, Pink Diamond is set to host quarterly events aimed at empowering women and providing networking opportunities, a testament to Belin’s commitment to uplift and inspire.
