Stepping up pedestrian safety and paving the way for smoother traffic, the City of Kirkland has unveiled plans for a new Lake Street Pedestrian Scramble, set to launch this spring. Slated for the intersection of Lake Street and Kirkland Avenue, the project aims to allow pedestrians to navigate crossings in all directions, a stop in traffic granting them free rein. This intersection upgrade brings a fresh take on city walks, marrying functionality with the allure of Kirkland's waterfront and downtown stretch.

In a bid to enhance the safety and visibility of those on foot or wheels, the redesign will bring the intersection up to sidewalk level. The adjustment errs on the side of caution, allowing for a seamless street-to-sk sidewalk transition. Linked to a statement from the City of Kirkland, the project also includes a refurbishment of curb ramps and a modernization of traffic signals in the vicinity.

But the improvements aren't solely pedestrian-focused. The infrastructure beneath will see enhancements with the installation of a more durable stormwater system. Designed to prevent pooling water at the raised intersection's foundation, it's a preventative measure ensuring longevity and utility.

In conjunction with these structural changes, the project's aesthetic element will not be overlooked. Landscaping, street furnishing, and strategic lighting, alongside pavers and decorative concrete, are being introduced to weave the upgraded area into the fabric of Park Lane. The new design is clearly aiming to create a visual and functional link, tying in the streetscape with its popular Park Lane counterpart.
