LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn Honors Community Advocate Margie Rodriguez for Commitment to Social JusticeSource: County of Los Angeles, California

In a nod to Women's History Month, LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn honored Margie Rodriguez, a staunch ally of Cesar Chavez and an active community advocate. Rodriguez, having stood by Chavez during the height of the labor movement, has continued her journey of social justice well into the present day.

"From standing shoulder to shoulder with Cesar Chavez to standing up for her community here in LA County, Margie Rodriguez has dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice," Hahn was quoted in an announcement. Margie's unwavering passion to aiding the less fortunate has carved her place in history, according to the Supervisor. Rodriguez's commitment is marked not just by words but by action—she is the founder of South Whittier's annual Cesar E. Chavez Remembrance Event and Community Service Project.

The ceremony, which shone a spotlight on Rodriguez's unwavering dedication, was graced by the presence of Paul Chavez, who is no less than the progeny of the celebrated labor leader himself. Until his retirement last year, Paul Chavez presided over the Cesar Chavez Foundation, and he made clear the role Rodriguez played in bolstering the efforts of his late father and the United Farm Workers Movement.

"He understood that his work didn't happen by him doing the work alone, that it was a result of the sacrifice and hard work of many good, decent people from all walks of life whose names a lot of times are not known to the greater public. At the head of that list is Margie Rodriguez who's been there since day one," Paul Chavez substantiated during his introduction of Rodriguez at the event.

The heartening exchange during the ceremony also included Rodriguez's own acknowledgment of the support she's received from Hahn. "There isn't anything that I won't ask Hahn to do for the people of South Whittier, which are very needy people. And she's always there for me. So I'd like to thank you, Janice, from the bottom of my heart," Rodriguez expressed. It's a testament to a community’s reverence for one of their tireless champions and a reminder of the power behind the people who fight from the shadows.
