A tragic incident unfolded in Warren, Michigan, where an 8-year-old boy critically injured himself by accidentally shooting himself in the head. The child was inside his family's third-floor apartment at the Cove on 10 complex when the event occurred on Friday afternoon.

According to The Macomb Daily, the boy was taken to St. John Ascension Moross in Detroit. He was reported to be breathing on his own and responsive to pain stimuli during transport to the hospital. Warren Police are currently working to confirm if the weapon was securely stored in the household where both parents were home at the time of the shooting. Warren Police Lt. John Gajewski stated that the boy might have found the unsecured handgun in his residence.

Emergency services quickly responded to the 911 call, notably with Detroit and Center Line police assisting to expedite the child's journey to the hospital. "I don’t believe the ambulance stopped for a single intersection. We got the kid down there in record time," Lt. Greg Booton told WXYZ.

Sgt. Gregory Booten from Warren police described the shooting as a tragedy and appealed to gun owners, “I would just ask if you keep a firearm at home, please lock it up, secure it, keep it away from your children." Booton stressed the importance of gun safety in homes with children during an interview with FOX 2 Detroit. The child's uncle, Lamarr, also reflected on the incident, saying, "We got to do better," indicating the need for increased gun safety awareness.

The ramifications of such incidents can be severe for the gun owner. In cases where unsecured firearms lead to harm, legal consequences can include felony charges and prison sentences, reflecting the gravity of maintaining vigilance over weapon storage. Warren Police Department is urging anyone with additional information to come forward and contact Detective Rose at 586-574-4793.
