A 37-year-old San Antonio man has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly attacking two individuals with a shovel earlier this month. According to reports by KENS 5, Joe Frank Arechiga is accused of assaulting two of his neighbors in the 2600 block of West Travis Street, located between West Martin Street and West Commerce Street.

The incident began when Arechiga, allegedly wielding a shovel, was seen chasing two young children on bicycles down an alleyway. A 68-year-old man intervened to protect the children, at which point, the assailant turned his aggression toward the elder. The man's 21-year-old granddaughter tried to stop the assault and was struck on the head with the shovel, causing a visible contusion, "police say the suspect hit the young woman's head with the shovel causing a visible contusion, then ran off," as reported by KENS 5.

Authorities later arrested Arechiga, who is now facing charges for his actions. According to KSAT, the male victim suffered a large wound to his forearm, and the granddaughter was left with a sizable bruise on her head. Detectives have evaluated the shovel used in the attack and determined that its use was capable of causing serious bodily injury or death.

Following the attack, the victims identified Arechiga as their assailant, which eventually led to his arrest, with a bond set at $80,000. "The pair were able to identify Arechiga as their attacker and he was eventually arrested by police," as was stated in an affidavit obtained by KSAT. Despite the violent nature of the incident, motives behind the assault are currently unclear as the investigation continues.
