An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer was taken into cuffs following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, officials have said. The man in question, Richard Podkowski, was arrested after police responded to the incident that unfolded on Belford Avenue.

According to a report by LAPD's newsroom, the call came in on Tuesday, prompting a quick response from the authorities. Podkowski, who has been part of the force since 2018, was found to be the suspect and was subsequently booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon under California Penal Code Section 245.

As per the NBC Los Angeles coverage of the arrest, the LAPD has since placed Podkowski on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases. The internal affairs division jumped on the case at once, launching an administrative investigation that's running alongside the criminal one.

Despite the severity of the allegations, Podkowski was released and is currently out of custody, it has not been revealed if he's posted bail or if he was released under another standard protocol. The LAPD is continuing its investigation, with the West Bureau, where Podkowski is assigned, now under a cloud of its own. Concerns about police conduct echo once more in the streets of Los Angeles, but the department has not yet issued any further updates or comments on the arrest.
