Uvalde Dad Charges Ahead, Justice for Uzi and 20 Fallen Angels in Texas TragedySource: Wikipedia/Uvalde school shooting

As the small Texas town of Uvalde commemorated two grim years since the Robb Elementary School massacre, the voices clamoring for justice and reform refuse to be silenced. Among them is Brett Cross, who lost his 10-year-old son, Uziyah Garcia, affectionately known as Uzi, in the tragic event that also claimed the lives of 18 other children and two teachers. Cross has firmly positioned himself at the forefront of the enduring battle for change and accountability, constantly challenging local, state, and national authorities over what he perceives to be their inaction.

Despite a $2 million settlement reached by 19 of the victims' families with the City of Uvalde, as reported by KENS 5, Cross is determined to systematically hold to account the various layers of law enforcement. His unwavering aim is to help fundamentally alter the current gun legislation, which might, as much as the loss is irreversible, go on to save future innocent lives.

Reflecting on the chain of responsibility, Brett Cross expounded on his strategy. "We started with the school police, now we are focusing on the Uvalde Police Department, and after that we will move onto the sheriff's office, then the DPS and then Border Patrol," he explained in an interview obtained by The Statesman. This plan of action comes after Cross's direct and emotional confrontation with Uvalde County Commissioner Mariano Pargas, who was acting police chief on the day of the shooting. The confrontation led to Cross's arrest at a county commissioners court meeting in late February, for what was deemed disruption.

"Our whole fight is making sure that he is remembered, that he is not a statistic. We fight to save children's lives," Brett Cross said to The Statesman. The Crosses have turned their unimaginable grief into activism, advocating for an assault weapons ban and tighter red-flag laws—measures they believe would plug the current gaps in gun control.
