Baltimore residents, wave goodbye to the sun for a little while. The National Weather Service in Baltimore MD/Washington DC advises a low pressure system will usher in some erratic weather today with a cold front hot on its heels later this afternoon and evening. A reprieve is coming though, as we expect a strong area of high pressure to grace us with its presence on Monday and Tuesday, making way for clear skies and comfy temperatures before it slips offshore.

Early risers might have caught a light show this morning, as scattered thunderstorms rumbled through, leaving pockets of heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes. If you were looking east of Baltimore towards the Chesapeake Bay around 0720Z, you might’ve seen what remained of them fade into the distance. And though the storms weren't exactly the organized type, they certainly didn't skimp on drama, or moisture, for that matter.

Think it’s warm now? This is just the muggy prologue. With current temps teasing the 70s and dew points hanging out in the low to mid-70s, the National Weather Service tells us showers are likely to pop up throughout the morning due to the sticky atmospheric smorgasbord we're stewing in. Not a fan of high heat and humidity? Well, predictions for today’s heat indices venture into the 100 to 104 degree marks, shy of the Heat Advisory bar but plenty to make you want to take it easy. Drink up, find some shade, or better yet – just stay inside.

But tonight promises a cooler change of pace, as lows fall into a more comfortable mid-50s to low-60s range, accompanied by a gentle push of northerly winds. Looking ahead, the National Weather Service forecasting high pressure to bring us below-average temperatures and lower humidity levels before they venture offshore during the latter half of the week and a warm front turns up the heat dial once again.

As we trend warmer mid-week, the thermometer is set to float in the upper 80s and low 90s, flanked by drier conditions courtesy of the offshore high pressure. However, a cold front approaching from the north of the Great Lakes brings a chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the week, so keep those umbrellas handy. It’s a humid horizon for Independence Day, though, with temperatures expected to swelter into the mid to upper 90s for those of us residing east of the Blue Ridge.
