It was announced last Friday that a District woman has been convicted of involvement in a Christmas Day robbery in 2023, according to an announcement made by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith. Derricka Burton, 20, from Washington, D.C., was found guilty by a jury on charges of robbery and conspiracy last Thursday, as reported on the official website of the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Columbia.

Superior Court Judge Robert Salerno presided over the trial, scheduling Burton's sentencing for the late summer, August 23. Caught on video at approximately 2:38 p.m. on December 25, Burton, alongside three co-conspirators, targeted a couple at Alethia Tanner Park on Harry Thomas Way Northeast. The government's evidence revealed that after a huddle with her confederates, two approached the victims, brandished a gun, and demanded valuable items, including a Canada Goose jacket and a cellphone. The group, with Burton picking up dropped items from the robbery, fled together. Following an investigation by the MPD, Burton was apprehended on February 12, 2024.

The work of the Metropolitan Police Department was hailed by Graves and Smith in the course of announcing the verdict. The video capture of the incident was pivotal to the government’s case, showing Burton's involvement with the co-conspirators both before and after the act. Michael Toogun and Katrenia Shelly, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, represented the government in prosecuting the case.
