In a tragic incident in Charlotte's University City Division, a fatal accident claimed the life of a pedestrian early Friday morning. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Jerome Lydell Nelson, 43, who was struck by an Amtrak train. Local enforcement officials responded to the emergency call on the 8100 block of Old Concord Road around 12:50 a.m., as reported by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Upon arrival to the scene, first responders found Nelson unresponsive beside the tracks. Despite the efforts of the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC, Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement collecting physical evidence and awaiting toxicology results to learn more about the moments leading up to the fatal collision. The preliminary findings suggest that Nelson was sitting on the tracks when the southbound Amtrak train made contact.
