In the pre-dawn calm of downtown Los Angeles, an illegal street takeover escalated into a shocking display of flames and chaos, as two cars were engulfed in fire at the intersection of 18th and Main streets around 3 a.m. Saturday. KTLA reports that a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said there were upwards of 50 cars converging on the location.

Witnesses recounted seeing vehicles swerving recklessly, while tire marks were imprinted on the street as evidence of the disruption and hundreds witnessed the event, during which the cars became ablaze, it was unclear if by incendiary intent or by misadventure; onlookers watched, with some traffic braving its way around the leaping flames, according to NBC Los Angeles.

Attempts by the Los Angeles Fire Department to quell the fiery scene were initially obstructed by the assembled crowd and the mass of vehicles, though firefighters were eventually able to douse the flames within effecting a resolution in ten minutes. Remarkably, no arrests stemmed from the incident, and the charred remnants of the vehicles were impounded, as stated in KTLA's coverage.
