Hillsdale County Mourns First Law Enforcement Death in Nearly 100 Years, Deputy Killed in Line of Duty, Suspect Fatally Shot by PoliceSource: Michigan State Police

A somber cloud hangs over Hillsdale County as the community reckons with the death of a sheriff's deputy, marking a tragic loss for the jurisdiction's law enforcement which has seen no such death in its ranks for nearly a century. The deputy, whose name is yet to be released, was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop on Thursday. The suspect, identified as Eric Michael Fiddler, was later killed in a subsequent standoff with Michigan State Police (MSP), according to 13ABC.

Events unfolded around the intersection of Beecher and Lamb roads in Jefferson Township when the deputy, conducting the traffic stop, attempted to take Fiddler into custody. Fiddler, unleashing a violent retort to the call of the law, allegedly shot the deputy before fleeing the scene. With a palpable urgency, another deputy on the scene rushed the wounded officer to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced deceased.

The sequence of events sparked an expansive manhunt involving multiple agencies, including the FBI and the ATF. Approximately four hours after the fatal confrontation, Fiddler was encountered by authorities in a field near Culbert and Osseo streets. According to 13ABC, it was then that "Fiddler shot at MSP’s emergency services team, who then returned fire, striking and killing Fiddler."

MSP commented on the resolution of the standoff, saying, "Fiddler was instructed to surrender and produced a weapon and fired on troopers. Troopers returned fire and Fiddler was pronounced deceased on scene," as per CBS News Detroit. They also conveyed their deep regret for the death of the deputy, withholding their identification pending family notification. The case has now evolved into a complex investigation with MSP processing two crime scenes related to these fatal incidents.

The Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office, touched by a loss that echoes through time, has indicated that a news conference may be forthcoming to provide further details on the incident and honor the deceased deputy's service.
