Houston Man Charged with Aggravated Assault on Officers Following Standoff and Gunfire ExchangeSource: Google Street View

A suspect has been charged following a tense exchange of gunfire with police officers at a Houston residence earlier this week. Juan Alberto Gallegos, 40, is facing aggravated assault charges against a public servant after firing at Houston Police officers who were responding to a family disturbance call.

Officers received a distress report at a 1006 Kress Street address early Tuesday morning. A distrailed caller informed them that her boyfriend's father, later identified as Gallegos, was armed and threatening harm to herself and other family members, according to a statement from Houston Police Department. The officers, who are part of the HPD's Northeast Patrol Division, arrived at the scene and managed to extricate the endangered individuals without Gallegos's awareness.

The situation escalated when the responders tried to communicate with the accused. According to the City of Houston's news release, Gallegos refused to open the gate to approach police, leading to a standoff. Approximately an hour into the standoff, Gallegos opened his door and pointed a handgun at the officers, discharging at least one shot. Officers J. Luna, D. Zhu, and Probationary Police Officer B. Martel, who were not harmed in the altercation, returned fire before seeking cover.

A specialized SWAT team arrived at the location an hour later, resulting in Gallegos's arrest without further incidents. The Harris County District Attorney's Office was consulted, and Gallegos has since been charged for his actions during the confrontation. As part of the protocol, Houston Police Department's Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division are looking into the officer-involved shooting.
