An Illinois man has faced the weight of the law for his part in the Jan. 6 rampage at the U.S. Capitol, with a federal judge handing down a sentence for assault on law enforcement officers. Quinn Keen, 36, from Manteno, Illinois, was ordered to serve 24 months in prison followed by 24 months of supervised release, in addition to coughing up $2,000 in restitution, as per the U.S. Department of Justice.

Keen's guilty plea back on Feb. 20 stemmed from charges of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers during what became a notorious day in American politics. Court documents reveal Keen had journeyed from Illinois to D.C. to protest the 2020 presidential election outcome. His actions on that day escalated as he confronted police officers barricading the Capitol grounds and, eventually, tossed a water bottle and a metal travel mug in aggression.

When the mob breached the police defense, Keen was seen triumphantly entering the Capitol and, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, later smoking marijuana in the Rotunda. He remained unlawfully inside the government building for approximately 37 minutes, knowing his entry was without permission.

The FBI apprehended Keen on April 6, 2023, in Chicago. Since Jan. 6, over 1,450 individuals have been charged related to the Capitol breach. Among them, more than 500 individuals are facing serious felony charges. The collective effort of the U.S. Attorney’s Offices from the District of Columbia and the Northern District of Illinois, the FBI's field offices, and the U.S. Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department have played vital roles in the ongoing investigations and subsequent prosecutions.
