Lake St. Clair's Summer Discovery Cruise Program Sets Sail for an Educational Journey in July 2024Source: Macomb County

The waves of Lake St. Clair are set to carry knowledge as well as boats this summer, thanks to the revitalized Summer Discovery Cruise program. MSU Extension, in collaboration with Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA) and Michigan Sea Grant, has revived this educational adventure, connecting people to the splendors and sciences of the Great Lakes. As stated by Andrew Cox, director/health officer of the Macomb County department of Health and Community Services, overseeing MSU Extension, excitement is in the air. "We’re excited to bring the Summer Discovery Cruise program back for 2024," he told the department's news portal earlier this month.

With the kick-off scheduled for July 9, those curious about the aquatic world can hop on a two-hour tour offering insights into Lake St. Clair’s ecosystem. A myriad of themes like local birds, fish populations, scientific endeavors, and even shipwrecks will be explored, enlightening passengers about the lake's rich biodiversity and historical tales. Angela Scapini, a Sea Grant Extension Educator, has helped craft a program brimming with engaging speakers and trivia nights, fostering both fun, and education in equal measure. "We’ve got awesome topics and guest speakers lined up, and we even have a couple ‘trivia night’ themed cruises included in this year’s schedule," Angela effused in a statement shared earlier by the MSU Extension Service.

Tickets are set at $30 a pop, accessible via the Huron-Clinton Metroparks website, with the option to purchase them over the phone for those less internet-inclined. Cruisers wanting to embark from the Lake St. Clair Metropark marina at one of the various departure times – 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p’clock – are advised to book their spots swiftly, as spaces are known to fill with the same speed as a summer squall rolls in.

Scheduled from July 9-28, the Summer Discovery Cruises aim to embed Great Lakes literacy and foster resiliency within communities. It's a place-based educational initiative that not only underscores the importance of preserving our bodies of water but also instills a sense of stewardship in each participant.
