A Maryland woman has been handed down a sentence of three years probation and ordered to pay over $50,000 in restitution following her conviction for siphoning federal funds. Briayell Moore, a Laurel, Maryland resident, was sentenced in a federal court for theft of government money from two federal programs. The information was declared in a release from the office of United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan.

More, 43 was accused of fibbing about her household details to benefit from Housing Assistance Payments and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Payments. These programs are operated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, respectively. According to the court documents, the misrepresentation took place from around June 2010 until May 2017.

In the sentencing, Senior United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti noted, "Moore’s conduct deprived other deserving community members of the benefits to which they were entitled." Moore, had she been truthful about her marital status, income, and other key factors, would not have qualified for the assistance she received. Senior Judge Conti's observations were part of the court documents reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Nicole A. Stockey led the prosecution of the case, which followed an investigation by the Inspector General offices of both the HUD and the USDA, as well as the Allegheny Housing Authority’s Investigations Unit. Praise for the thorough investigation that led to Moore's conviction was given by U.S. Attorney Olshan, acknowledging the collaborative effort of the agencies involved.
